I have a female CEO at my company! And a female second-in-command as well. Which is totally awesome and amazing, but I do think that she faces condescension and sexism on at least a weekly basis. I think that most people at my company really like her, but even still, I've heard my own father say things that he wouldn't say about a male CEO. And he likes her too. It's just... it's just one of those things in our society right now. It gets better and better, but we're still a long way from being there.
*scribbles down useful information* Thank you; I'd thought that this would be the case (screw you, society), but I got in a bit of an argument about it and I wanted to see what other people think.
(If you were wondering, this is about Ms. Saito. Much as I'd like to come up with these questions without being driven to them by fandom...)
Not only that, but you have to consider the social dynamics in Japan, which is, I think, even more stratified than it is here. If Ms. Saito is running the company, it would probably be because her husband passed away.
At least, this is what I've gleaned from what I know about Japan. I'm not really an expert.
Yeah, I was wondering about those elements too; I don't know much about the country either, though. The backstory I was picturing was that Ms. Saito and her father were quite close, and she inherited from him when the company was smaller and she was still fairly young. The board of directors expected her to be pretty much a puppet; instead she took the reins and turned the company into something so huge she can afford to buy airlines to make things neater. I'd imagine that the initial combination of youth and gender would mean she took a lot of crap along the way.
I like it! And I get this idea that no one messes with (Mr.) Saito; I imagine Ms. Saito would have this same air, after she's fought through a great deal of the crap.
I'm glad! And actually, that's the big difference. Mr. Saito has an air that nobody messes with him; Ms. Saito has an air that people mess with her and then they are never seen again.
Possibly depends to some extent on where she's working, but there are gonna be at least occasional idiots and people who say things without thinking everywhere. Since I've never been involved in the corporate world I don't feel qualified to comment further.
